SANDING BLOCKS for Metal - Everyone here, and the students in my Restoration School, all agree that these sanding bars are absolutely terrific! They are a special rubber compound completely saturated with silicon carbide particles. It works on metal like a pencil eraser works on paper! Self-cleaning, self-sharpening, they will not clog up. The blocks wear naturally as you use them. You can cut them with a utility knife to fit anys hape needed! Can be used wet or dry with water, oil, or any lubricant. LACQUER - Polished brass parts need protection from acids in your hands and oxidizers in the air. Spraying parts with lacquer after polishing parts will not only protect the finish you just spent hours achieving, but it will also allow you to handle the newly polished brass safely, without the acid in your fingers etching your fingerprints into it.
I offer two types of lacquer....CLEAR and GOLD TINTED.
If you want to retain the newly polished, high shine of your brass...choose CLEAR; if you like the clean, new look, but want to tone it down a bit, choose the gold tinted lacquer.

ROUGE POLISHING COMPOUNDS
In restoration work we use a variety of polishing and buffing materials. What follows is not intended to be a complete 'dissertation' on the topic of polishing and buffing, but it will serve as a guide for the proper selection of the more common buffing/polishing rouges available.
The rouges listed below come in a bar form. They are used with cotton/felt buffing wheels. Different makers have different names for the same compounds, and it is sometimes hard to know exactly what the material is, but here are the more common compounds and their applications:
TRIPOLI: A natural product (diatomaceous earth) that is brown or reddish in color. It is coarse in texture and used chiefly for removing heavy oxidation.
ROUGE: A natural product that is produced in a range of hardnesses suitable for different applications. Generally speaking, the harder the rouge, the more material it will remove and the more it will scratch the material being polished. Each color will give a different degree of polish (luster) and the finished luster intensity is purely a personal preference!
RED ROUGE: Jeweler's rouge, is the oldest of the rouges. It is used for producing high luster on gold, silver, brass and other soft metals. Has little "cutting" action, but polishes by burnishing the metal.
YELLOW ROUGE: Harder than the Red, while good for hard metals it is most often used on brass. I personally use the Yellow and White for most of my brass polishing.
WHITE: Harder than the Yellow, removes heavier oxidation, but can scratch some softer materials. Can be followed by Yellow rouge for a final polish. Excellent on steel...for polishing screw heads and other steel parts.
GREEN: Harder than the White, good on hard metals.
(Buffing wheels work best when not loaded heavily with rouge. Clean your wheel often. You can make a tool to clean the buffing wheels by taking a piece of 2" wide shelving wood and hammering a few rows of finishing nails into a section about 3" long. Have the points of the nails stick out about 1/4". Hold that against the wheel for a few seconds and it will remove the built-up rouge residue.)__________________________________________________________________________________

POLISHING PAPERS
Ordinary 'sandpaper' is not suitable to be used on metals. The recommended papers to use are "Wet or Dry" sanding papers. They can be used dry but, to avoid scratching, it is advised to use them 'wet'. Use a light oil, alcohol or clock cleaning solution...to 'wet' the paper. The higher the grit number, the finer the cut.
GRITS 320: Used for fairly fast cutting on steel and brass to remove filing marks. 220 can be used on rusty areas on steel, but will leave scratch marks; 320 is the coarsest you would ever want to use on a comb.
GRITS 400/600: Progressively finer grits to be used before turning to the buffing wheel! Best for cleaning tarnish/light rust off combs....start with 400 grit if there is no heavy oxidation, then finish off with 600. Always use WET!
GRITS 1200/1500: These are very fine polishing papers most often used in worm polishing and also in final finishing of cases. Use WET!
Having a few pieces of each paper on hand is a good idea....you'll find more uses for them than just with Music Boxes! Each sheet is 5 1/2" x 8 1/2".
- #TWD32 - 320 grit - $0.60/sheet
- #TWD40 - 400 grit - $0.60/sheet
- #TWD60 - 600 grit - $0.65/sheet
- #TWD10 - 1000 grit - $0.90/sheet
- #TWD12 - 1200 grit - $0.90/sheet
- #TWD15 - 1500 grit - $0.90/sheet
